Welcome to the Rocky Mountain Medical Toxicology Fellowship

Welcome to the Rocky Mountain Medical Toxicology Fellowship

Medical toxicology is a dynamic and sundry specialty that draws from emergency medicine, critical care, internal medicine, family medicine, occupational and environmental health, pediatrics, and public health. Medical toxicologists are trained to identify and manage chemical-induced illnesses, toxic exposures, and other complex toxicological emergencies. The field encompasses a broad range of topics, including:

  • Acute and chronic poisoning

  • Adverse drug reactions

  • Substance abuse and withdrawal

  • Envenomations

  • Workplace and environmental chemical exposures

  • Drug metabolism and effects

  • Mass exposure events involving industrial chemicals or chemical, biological, or radiologic agents

About Our Fellowship

Our two-year, ACGME-accredited Medical Toxicology Fellowship is based at Rocky Mountain Poison & Drug Safety (RMPDS), a department within the Denver Health and Hospital Authority. As Interim Program Director, I’m proud to lead a program that offers an outstanding blend of clinical, academic, and research experiences.

Key Features of Our Fellowship Include:

  • Clinical Experience: Fellows provide bedside toxicology consultations at Denver Health & Hospital Authority, University of Colorado Hospital, and Children’s Hospital Colorado. These institutions offer exposure to a wide range of patients and toxicologic conditions.

  • Poison Center Training: Fellows train at Rocky Mountain Poison Center (RMPC), one of the oldest and busiest poison centers in the country. The RMPC manages around 100,000 human exposure calls annually, including about 4,000 involving direct medical toxicologist input. Our service region includes Colorado, Montana, Hawaii, and Nevada, with consultations extending nationally and internationally.

  • Faculty and Mentorship: Fellows learn from a dedicated team of 26 board-certified medical toxicologists and 2 ABAT-certified clinical toxicologists, along with support from a multidisciplinary research team of over 50 professionals.

  • Education & Teaching: Fellows actively teach rotating medical students, residents & fellows locally and from across the country in emergency medicine, pediatrics, internal medicine, family medicine, nephrology and addiction medicine.

  • Research Opportunities: Our fellows have robust support to pursue research, collaborate on national studies, and present at major conferences. Many obtain grant funding, complete coursework and complete multiple publications during their training.

Program Accreditation and Certification

Since July 1, 2000, our program has maintained continuous ACGME accreditation. Graduates are eligible to sit for the Medical Toxicology subspecialty board examination, recognized by the American Board of Emergency Medicine, the American Board of Pediatrics, and the American Board of Preventive Medicine.
